ELCA-L friends,
A brief introduction.
I am Arlen Viste, a chemistry faculty member at Augustana College,
Sioux Falls, SD, a college of the ELCA. I particularly appreciate the
church college environment, and have been at Augustana most of my career.
Currently 59, I am the husband of Betty. We met in a math class
as undergraduates at St. Olaf College. We have three children:
Solveig, David, and Mark, and 5 grandchildren: twins Nandini and
Natalie in NC, and Bob, Heather, and Michael in Sioux Falls.
We are lifelong Lutherans, currently ELCA. I grew up in ELC and ALC,
Betty in Augustana Synod and LCA. My ancestry is Norwegian and
German, and Betty's is Finnish and Swedish. We grew up in Minnesota.
After St. Olaf, I did doctoral work at U of Chicago, postdoc at
Columbia, sabbaticals at Argonne National Lab (near Chicago), and
Abo Akademi (Turku, Finland).
Besides many fine chemists, I have been influenced by Howard Hong,
Kierkegaard, Whitehead, Heisenberg, Joseph Sittler, Phil Hefner,
and probably Lake Wobegon, among others. Two chemists particularly
influential in my life are Albert Finholt (St. Olaf) and Henry Taube
(U of Chicago and Stanford).
Best wishes.

Greetings!
After reading the introductions of members of the elca-l (which I think is
a great idea to have on the WWW - thanks to the ones that provided that
service!) I will share a bit of background of myself. I had been a
"lurker" on the lthrn-l while living in Phoenix. After our move to Hong
Kong this summer, re-subscribing, but missed some of my "favorite"
contributers to the list I had "known" this spring. Finally figured out
the reason & so am now re-subscribed to elca-l. And I look forward to some
great conversations again!
Both my husband and I are LC-MS bred & born, he from western Wisconsin,
attending Concordia Academy, St. Paul, Minn. (in the all boys days),
graduating from Concordia St. Paul. My dad was a chemistry Prof. at
Concordia Seward so I graduated from CHS & CTC. We taught in St. Paul at
Walther Jr Hi & Concordia Academy before moving to Hong Kong, 1973-80,
teaching at Hong Kong International School. Returned to America to raise
our two boys and started Valley Lutheran High School in Phoenix, Arizona in
1981. Fritz was teacher, AD, headmaster, history, art, etc & I taught
theology. This summer we returned to Hong Kong (the boys are now Senior &
Sophomore at NAU in Flagstaff), Fritz being one of the 2 assistant h.s.
principal's & I'm teaching religion in the high school. HKIS is school of
the LC-MS started in 1966, 2400 students from 40 countries, pre-school -
grade 12, American/English college-prep education. It's good to be back in
Asia - in a VERY exciting time of its history!!
I request and covet your prayers for Hong Kong and the Chinese people at
this crucial time of their lives. So few recognize the God of the Bible
who remains "unchanged" in their times of uncertainty and change! HKIS is
making a difference in people's lives. We covet your prayers to be bold
and compassionate carriers of God's profound love and care of all people -
esp. in these next months . Thanks!
Again, it will be fun to "hear" from "old friends" again!
