After reading the bios posted by Dr. Jorstad and Dr. Holst this
morning, my original enthusiasm for this list has risen still higher. I
am delighted to share in this on-line community.
I am a professor at the University of Texas-Pan American, in
Edinburg, Texas, deep in the Rio Grande Valley, just a dozen miles this
side of the Mexican border. I teach philosophy and religion here,
entering my third year. I was an ELCA pastor (and, before that, an LCA
pastor) for seventeen years, serving parishes in Harrisburg, PA and St.
Louis, MO. My MDiv is from LSTC, and I have an STM from Gettysburg --
both cherished experiences. My PhD is in philosophy from Southern
Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois. My dissertation topic was
the work of Alasdair MacIntyre and the concept of a social practice.
I am married to Jackie, a pharmaceutical researcher and resident
guru in competitive intelligence for Searle Pharmaceutical Company. We
share our space with four children, aged 11 to 21.
I have too many academic interests for my own good, but at
present they are focused in ethics (primarily professional ethics) and
philosophy of religion (particularly the recent work of Alvin
Plantinga). I have published on A. MacIntyre's work on social practices
and the nature of the Self, and have a manuscript in progress,
tentatively entitled, "The Professions as Social Practices." I also have
a strong interest in aesthetics, especially music theory -- and, of course,
music as a social practice.
My own professional life has been rather checkered. I began as a
sports writer for several years before going to seminary. I have also
served as president for ten years of a charitable international relief and
development funding agency, and I worked and traveled in Africa during
that time. I have managed a couple of public radio stations, and I am
certified as a marriage and family counselor, and had a counseling
practice for several years.
This introduction is turning out to be longer than my vita, and
now I worry I'll be cited by the list manager as an example of
unwarranted verbosity. But, hey, I'm an academic.
I look forward to conversing with you all.

Hallo!
As a new member of this list I would like to introduce myself. I am Marjan
Peters-Allijn, born in Amsterdam, since 1972 married with Paul and mother
of five teenagers now. We are members of the dutch reformed church in
Wychen, a village near the old roman city of Nijmegen (Holland).
Since 8 years I am running a christian home exchange organisation,Bon
Voyage, in Holland, Germany and the U.k. The last years it has been
growing to 400 addresses. All those members exchange their homes during
the holiday times. So I am quite busy with this little office and my
family . I am looking for similar organisations abroad with the same
ministry in order to cooperate. If you, as private person, are interested
in a home exchange, you are very welcome to the Bon Voyage family.
I am looking forward to follow the interesting discussions on your list.
Groeten,
Marjan Peters

Hello, everyone:
Having sampled the introductions, I'm even more enthusiastic about the
list as a potential learning tool.
My wife Barbara and I live in the northern California mountain community
of Hayfork. That's part of the other California - the one you never see
on TV or in the newspaper. Most days things are so quiet here we don't
even make the Weather Channel.
We're members of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Weaverville, where I am
currently president of the Congregation Council. As you might guess,
Holy Trinity is as small as it is rural. Each Sunday about fifty or
sixty worship together in our rented store-front quarters. We're now
involved in the process of completing the design and gathering all the
permits to begin construction.
Barbara is an aide and bus driver for the Trinity County Office of
Education, specializing in the severely challenged students, i.e. those
who may not have the ability to walk or talk or feed themselves. I
teach in our local school district's adult education program and help
out at the local high school as well as teaching history for Shasta
College (Redding, CA) in an extensive distance education program.
Previously I served twenty-plus years in the U. S. Navy from which I
retired with the rank of Lieutenant.
I doubt that I will have much to contribute with one exception -
questions.
Thanks for including us in this group.
