Dear Greg: Could you tell me how to pronounce "litrugy?" Do you pronounce it "lite-rugy?" If so, what's a "rugy?" Do you pronounce it "li-trugy?" If do, dost thy trugy li? On campus we are supposed to keep abreast, yea even ahead of liturgical trends, but even the Bibfelt Bibliofiles here at Syracuse University dont' know what a litrugy is! Please advise. Shrove Tuesday is "hastening on the wing," to mention nothing of Fastnacht, Carnival or Mardi Gras! "Litrugy" is normally practiced by military chaplains, and only those working at nucular installations. Litrugy, or its original gallic equivalent, Litrugi, is a small town in Loire where Bibfeldt and Bach collaborated on some of their most creative pieces, which ended up in the Anna Magdalena Collection along with sacralized editions of the piece on the lassy who made les fleurs vertes de jalousie. No, no, litrugby is a competitive form of liturgy, where anthems are selected to conteract the theology of the sermon, and prayer petitions traded until a winner emerges. Note: this is not a sport for the meek (see Matt 5:5). Two years ago, a wonderful woman became involved with the community at St. Francis Church, as she presided over the death of her son from HIV disease. She was very faithful at liturgy and at Bible class. She did exhibit an uncanny sense when, one day in class, she said, "Pastor, tell me more about the Lutheran lethargy."! Michael T.
