Wells Technology Team

During the summer of 1995, teachers from Wells Community Academy High School took READ 430: Computers and Reading with Dr. Louise Bohr. During this class, teachers learned to produce graphics projects for use in their classrooms, created spreadsheets to maintain records and organize data, and produce a HyperCard project to be used in their classrooms. One of the major goals of the course was to increase teachers' comfort level with the use of the computers so that they would, in turn, feel comfortable guiding students' use of computers in their classrooms.

Most of all, as Dr. Bohr expressed in a letter to the "Computer Crowd" at the end of the course, both she and the teachers "learned beyond what we expected and ... learned more than we expected to about how to learn together." The close ties, both among the Wells teachers and between Dr. Bohr and the teachers have continued throughout the project.

During the same summer, over 20 teachers attended a two week professional development workshop on Image Processing for Teachers. This workshop introduced teachers to an application developed by the National Institutes for Health, NIH Image, which has numerous applications in mathematics and science classes.
In fact, the team from the Spring of 1995 was so enthusiastic about their work, that Wells requested another computer course! As a result, two computer classes were offered onsite at Wells during the summer of 1997. Dr. Bohr repeated her earlier course with a new group of students. Dr. Jeffrey Messerer from the Department of Special Education offered an advanced computer course.
