McCosh Middle School Team

Professional development and establishing an advisory program were top priorities when the existing McCosh Middle School Team was added to CLC during the third year of the project with Middle School Coordinator Mary Rodgers served as the CLC team leader.

In collaboration with Roosevelt University McCosh teachers have taken courses to obtain the Illinois middle school endorsement. Some have been offered on-site and specifically designed to meet the needs of McCosh teachers.

In addition to endorsement courses, teachers have attended several middle school conferences under CLC auspices. The middle school team meets regularly to discuss insights and knowledge gained through professional development activities.

Starting a middle school advisory program has been a major accomplishment of the middle school team. To create time in the over- scheduled school day teachers and students begin school early twice a week for advisory. The time provides an opportunity for teachers and students to connect informally and to deal with social and

emotional issues that are part of the middle school student's life. The time is used for informal talk, esteem-building activities and games that help students prepare for the day ahead and feel less isolated. McCosh teachers and students report that advisory has been a very important addition to student life at the school.
