Music and Mathematics

The story of the connections between math and music necessarily begin with rhythm. Rhythm is the basis upon which music is built, just as the concept of number is the basis of mathematics.

The time signature appears at the very beginning of the piece and resembles a fraction. The top number [like a "numerator"] tells how many beats of equal length occur in a measure. The bottom number [like a "denominator"] tells what kind of note gets one beat.

Name Whole Half Quarter Eighth Sixteenth
Fraction 1/1 1/2 1/4 1/8 1/16
Number that fit in one measure 1=2 2=2 4=2 8=2 16=2
