2. CREATING STORY PROBLEMS WITH GINGERBREAD MEN

State Goal for Learning 6: Demonstrate a knowledge and sense of numbers and their representations, including basic operations, ratios, and proportions, by using multiple ways of obtaining exact values and estimates to understand patterns involving numbers and their applications.

 

 Chicago Academic Standard: Solve real world problems which require addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division by appropriate strategies, such as using manipulatives, estimation, mental computation, paper and pencil.

Curriculum Framework Statement: Perform the operation of addition and subtraction in related story problems.

Activity: Using gingerbread men cutouts the children create their own story problems.

Materials: gingerbread men cutouts, paper, pencil, crayons

Writing Connection: Students write a story problem and a story about their word problems.

 

Assessment: 80% of the class will be able to create a story problem.
