The Collaborative Learning Centers Project of Northeastern Illinois University's Chicago Teachers' Center is a partnership between two universities and six Chicago Public Schools. Funded entirely by a three-year Fund for Improvement in Education grant from the U.S. Department of Education in 1994, project partners have shared expertise to develop new curriculum, assessments and learning environments which lead to all students meeting challenging academic standards. The project sought to simultaneously transform teaching and learning at the elementary, secondary and post secondary level.
This partnership truly developed into a community of learners; teachers, administrators, professors, project staff and university students have all learned with and from one another. Both schools and universities participated in a variety of joint professional development activities ranging from forums and leadership development activities to on-site professional development teams. Knowledge of the importance of parent and community involvement to the school change process lead to new initiatives at three of the partner schools. The use of information technologies and video helped project participants communicate effectively across institutions, and reflect on their learning as they produced booklets, videos, conference presentations, or web pages.
