ACCESS TO THE NEIU
COUNSELOR EDUCATION DEPARTMENT

Helpful information for persons who use wheelchairs,
whom are blind or have visual impairments or otherwise need paratransit services in Chicagoland.

LOCATION
The NEIU Classroom Building, where the Department of Counselor Education is located, is 3601 West Bryn Mawr Avenue. The building is located on the south side of Bryn Mawr Avenue as North Central Park Avenue ends coming from the north or driving south from Peterson Avenue. The Classroom Building at NEIU is located on Bryn Mawr Avenue accessed from the west from Kimball, Kedzie, or Western Avenues. Coming from the west, one may access Bryn Mawr Avenue from Pulaski Avenue.

TAP - TAXI ACCESS PROGRAM
The Regional Transportation Authority or RTA, Taxi Access Program (TAP) provides for a voucher system that can be used with any taxi company in Chicago. A voucher worth $13.50 may be purchased by eligible users for $1.75 each. A person may purchase 2-30 vouchers in a 7-day period either by mail or in person. A regular user must first establish eligibility including an interview with the RTA. The customer must first contact the RTA at 773-663-4357. The voucher value of $13.50 - cost of $1.75 each - would cover a single taxi ride to NEIU from anywhere in Chicago roughly north of Diversey coming from the south or from Skokie if one is coming from the north. From O'Hare Airport area from the west, if would probably cost the customer an extra $10.00 or so if using a voucher.

Once you arrive at the NEIU Classroom Building, as you directly face the building, one goes up the curve cut onto the sidewalk and then to the left, then making a right at the first sidewalk proceeding up a slight incline. Proceed approximately 50 feet, as you reach the left or east side of the Classroom Building. Once under cover which is flat sidewalk, there will be an automatic door opening button on the fence pole to the right. Push this button to open the automatic door. Enter the building there; proceed down a hallway 20 feet entering the wide open foyer area, then a left again approximately 20 feet along the windowed wall and left about eight feet to enter the elevator. Take the elevator to the 4th floor. As you exit the elevator on the 4th floor, turn right (north) to the end of the hallway and then turn left. The Counselor Education Department office is a few doors down on the right side - Room CLS 4073.

Before entering the building or to access other areas of the university, there will be brief periods of being outside ranging from approximately a hundred feet to two hundred yards, so you may want to dress appropriately to remain warm and dry in cold or damp weather. We can also arrange for someone to meet you at the curb to assist in getting up to our offices or to navigate around the university as a whole if you so desire. We have faculty, staff, and graduate assistants that would be most happy to host a tour on your first visit. The office telephone number is 773-442-5550.
